Meet our Maestro: Andrew Bisantz

Maestro Andrew Bisantz Returns to FGO Podium

Mo. Andrew Bisantz will conduct The Consul for Florida Grand Opera after being away last season. He served for 10 years as FGO’s resident conductor, during which time he conducted productions of The Magic Flute, Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, and a Cavalleria Rusticana – Pagliacci double bill. In addition, he conducted numerous performances of other productions, including the final FGO performance at Miami-Dade County Auditorium, Bizet’s Carmen.

In addition to his FGO engagements, Mo. Bisantz has held the post of Music Director of Oregan’s Eugene Opera for five seasons, where he has led local premieres of Nixon in China, Dead Man Walking, and Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West ("The Girl of the Golden West").  Additional recent conducting assignments have included productions at Wolf Trap, Brevard Music Festival, Boston Lyric Opera, and debuts this season at New York’s Tri Cities Opera and Virginia Opera.

Following a rehearsal of The Consul, he recently observed, “Music from The Consul has been a part of my life for over twenty years. Every undergraduate music department has a young dramatic soprano who sings Magda’s famous aria, “To This We’ve Come,” and the rest of his musical language has been in my ear for a long time as well.  I must say, it is a true pleasure to conduct this opera with such a stellar cast. One realizes just how wonderful Menotti’s vocal writing is when one hears it sung by singers like Kara Shay Thomson, Victoria Livengood, and Keith Phares. I not only think this opera is worthy musically, but it remains relevant to our current times. I think audiences are in for a supremely entertaining evening of musical drama.”
